“Juan Mata was the architect of the victory. His assist for Vergos’ second goal capped a performance of a level rarely seen in the Isuzu UTE A-League,” read the official competition website.
Mata was involved in Vergos’ opening goal during a first half in which he also struck the crossbar. After the break, he provided the assist for the 2–0 and came close to scoring himself with a long-range effort from 30 metres, brilliantly saved by visiting goalkeeper Joshua Smits.
The fans gave Mata a warm ovation as he left the pitch, rounding off a performance that left him with very positive feelings: “We needed this win. Melbourne Victory will now look to build on this momentum in the derby against Melbourne City, to be played next Saturday, 20 December.
