One win away from glory

A 2-0 win over Sivasspor leaves Juan Mata’s Galatasaray one win away from the title. It would be the 23rd Super League for Turkey’s most successful club and the first league title for Juan, who would complete a remarkable record.

Galatasaray SK are just one step away from becoming Super League champions. The three points against Sivasspor leave Juan Mata’s side one win away from securing the title. An unbeatable situation to lift a champion’s cup that has eluded them since 2019.

The match against Sivasspor, corresponding to the 35th matchday, was marked by a brace from Mauro Icardi (13th and 63rd minutes). The goals from the in-form Argentinian sparked jubilation in the stands of the Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi NEF Stadyumu, who were once again relentlessly cheering on their players.

Juan Mata came on in the 74th minute, replacing Dries Mertens. He did not miss any of the passes he attempted and helped the home side control the game until the end, taking their tally to 79 points. They are eight points clear of Fenerbahçe (although they have a game in hand on the chasing pack).

A win in their next game (against Ankaragücü) would mathematically clinch the title for Okan Buruk’s side. Juan Mata would win the league championship for the first time (rounding off an incredible record) and Galatasaray would regain the Super League crown, a competition they have won more times than anyone else in Turkey (22).
