Juan Mata’s Melbourne Victory brought 2025 to an outstanding close with a commanding 5–1 win over Wellington, climbing to sixth place in the Australian A-League table.
It was the third consecutive victory for Mata’s side, with the Spaniard once again playing a key role. Mata provided an assist, delivered two key passes and dictated the tempo of the game, completing 88% of his passes as he led his team from midfield.
Nikos Vergos was the standout performer on the day, opening the scoring after just seven minutes. Wellington responded shortly afterwards, but Melbourne Victory were determined not to let the points slip at home. Vergos restored the lead before the break, and after half-time the hosts extended their advantage in what turned into a true celebration for the home crowd..
