A set piece goal that has traveled around the world

Minute 34. Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory are level at 0–0. A free kick is awarded to the visitors. Juan Mata steps up to take it.
Thousands of miles away, at Manchester United’s training ground, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire are watching the match live. Maguire asks, “Over the wall?” Fernandes replies with confidence: “Yes, of course. He has to.”
Moments later, Mata delivers a stunning strike. His former United teammates are left amazed, quickly sharing the clip on social media. “The confidence I have in this guy,” Fernandes says with a smile.

We have seen Juan score goals like this with his left foot many times before at Chelsea and Manchester United — but not yet in Australia’s A-League. The goal is another example of the Spaniard’s quality and belief, qualities that have made him one of the league’s most influential players this season, leading the competition in goal contributions with four goals and ten assists.

Melbourne Victory later extended their lead through Charles Nduka, but Sydney FC fought back to earn a draw thanks to goals from Apostolos Stametelopoulos and Ahmet Arslan, in what proved to be one of the most entertaining matches of the weekend.

“I love Bruno and Harry, and it makes me really happy to see that they follow the A-League live and watch our games,” Mata said after the match. “Hopefully in Manchester United’s next game, Bruno can score a similar goal.”

The brilliance of the free kick — and the lively reaction video from Bruno Fernandes — quickly sent the goal around the world, sparking headlines and reactions across international media and social platforms.“The endless ‘prime’ of Mata,” wrote MARCA. “Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire celebrate Juan Mata’s stunning free kick,” added Goal.com.

““Mata adds another GOLAZO to his carousel of brilliant moments — hang it in the National Gallery of Victoria,” headlined the Australian edition of Football360.

All in all, another wave of recognition and affection for Juan Mata, who now has six matches left to play in the regular season with Melbourne Victory. The team currently sits fifth in the table, a position that secures a place in the playoffs for the title.
