An 80th-minute goal from Patrick Wood denied Melbourne Victory a place in the A-League semi-finals. Despite controlling the contest in chances, corners and possession, Juan Mata’s side were beaten 0–1, bringing their season to an earlier close than their supporters had hoped for.
A crowd of 16,000 saw the team off with warm applause, a gesture of appreciation for the effort shown throughout the campaign. It has been a particularly strong season for Juan Mata, who led the league in goal involvements with five goals and 12 assists. The Asturian also topped the competition for chances created.
Above all, Juan has enjoyed his football, while giving fans across the league plenty to enjoy in return. His performances have earned widespread recognition from teammates, coaches and supporters alike, reflected in his being named A-League Player of the Month for December, January, February and March.
Melbourne Victory’s players and staff will officially bring the season to a close this Monday, May 4, at the club’s gala dinner, where the campaign’s awards will be presented.
