One step closer to the title

Galatasaray’s win over İstanbul BB consolidates their lead in the Super League, five points clear of the chasing pack. Juan Mata is on his way to his first league title.

As the matchdays go by, Galatasaray SK are getting closer and closer to winning the Super League. The latest win, against İstanbul BB (1-0, with Icardi scoring from the penalty spot), strengthens their bid to lift the cup. A title longed for by the club (they have not won it since the 2018/19 season) and by Juan Mata himself, whose luxurious list of honours does not yet include a league tournament.

After 31 games, Okan Buruk’s side have 73 points, five more than Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş (albeit the latter with a game in hand). Their Istanbul rivals are struggling to keep pace with Galatasaray, boosted by a historic run of 14 consecutive victories that stretched into March.

World and European champion with the Spanish national team, Champions League winner with Chelsea, Europa League winner with Chelsea and Manchester United, Copa del Rey winner with Valencia… Less than a year after joining Galatasaray, Juan Mata is ready to add a Turkish league title to his extensive list of trophies.
