The MVP is not enough in the Melbourne Derby

Juan Mata put in his best performance in a Melbourne Victory shirt in the city derby.. The Spaniard was named Man of the Match, but his brilliance wasn’t enough to secure the win.

A vibrant atmosphere filled AAMI Park, with more than 18,000 fans witnessing a thrilling clash full of attacking football and goal-scoring chances. The visitors took an early lead through Caputo in the second minute, but Arthur Diles’ side responded with determination. Mata came close to equalising on two occasions — the first denied by a fine save from Beach, the second narrowly missing the top corner.

In the second half, Victory kept pushing, registering 20 shots and dominating possession, but it was Melbourne City who claimed all three points after Antoniu’s strike. “The result is frustrating, but for long stretches we played our best football of the season. We’ll take positives from this performance despite the scoreline,” said head coach Arthur Diles.

The A-League now pauses for two weeks for international fixtures. Melbourne Victory will return to action with three consecutive away games, starting on Saturday, 22 November, against Sydney FC.
