An always special match for Juan Mata

Manchester United and Chelsea matched their forces at Old Trafford (1-1). Fans of both teams greeted Juan with an ovation when he entered the pitch. Cristiano Ronaldo neutralized Marcos Alonso’s goal.

Manchester United drew with Chelsea at Old Trafford (1-1) in an early game of the 37th gameweek of the Premier League. Juan Mata played the final stretch of the duel against his first team in England. The excellent memory he left behind in the London club, together with the affection that the United fans feel for him, generated a scene as beautiful as it was atypical: the fans of both teams greeted his entrance onto the pitch with an ovation.

Juan joined the match in the 79th minute. He successfully completed all the passes he tried and did not shy away from physical contact in an intense and exciting duel, as matches against Chelsea usually are. However, the quality and pride of the Spanish international were not enough to alter the result. The final 1-1 was the result of goals from Marcos Alonso (minute 60) and Cristiano Ronaldo (62).

Following the draw against the reigning Champions League champions, the Red Devils will play at Old Trafford again on Monday. Brentford will be the opponent, in what will be Manchester United’s last match at their stadium in this 2021/22 campaign.
