Europa League, fertile ground for Mata

United plays against Zorya Luhansk this Thursday in Ukraine seeking a victory to have options to reach the first place of group A. Juan aspires to lift a trophy that he won back in 2013 and in which he has a record of 7 goal and 14 assists in 31 games.

This Thursday from 19 pm (18 pm British time) United will play for their qualification for the last 16 of the tournament. The Stadion Chornomorets, in Odessa (Ukraine), will host the clash between Zorya Luhansk and United in the final day of the group stage. United could get qualified even if they loose, but a victory will give them options to finish first, depending on the result between Feyenoord and Fenerbahce.

Juan returns to a favorable competition for him through out his career. So since the second best tournament in Europe was renamed as the Europa League, in the 2009/10 season, Mata has disputed 31 games and has achieved excellent numbers: 7 goals and 14 assists. In a more detailed analysis, we found two peaks in the offensive productivity in the tournament. In the 2009/10 Europa League, while at Valencia, scored five times and assisted four in twelve games. In the 2012/13 edition, in which he conquered the title with Chelsea, Juan scored 1 goal and assisted 5 times in 8 games. Two of those assists were in the final against Benfica, the second from a corner kick that Ivanovic netted home in the last minute of stoppage time.
