“I was told I’d be the first of many signings”

In an interview for the BBC Sports, Mata remembers the expectations at his arrival to United. A renewed hope thanks to the club economic effort to strengthen the squad.

Juan Mata is undergoing his second preseason with United, where he arrived in January 2014 with high ambitions. “They told me, you are very important, you are one of the first'”, Mata said to BBC Sports. Before signing for the Red Devils, Mata knew about the Club’s rebuilding task after Ferguson departure. Since Mata’s arrival, ten more players have signed for United.

“Last season we started a new philosophy with a new manager. It takes time. This season we know how the manager wants us to play. Van Gaal wants us to win with good football. He wants you to be the boss in the game and the team that makes the tempo”, stresses Mata who’s really kin on playing top European football: “Last year I watched the games at home, mainly with Ander Herrera and David De Gea. We need to be back there. This club needs to be fighting for the Champions League”.
