Messi magic secures Manchester United’s Champions League departure

Two goals from Leo Messi and one from Coutinho were enough to see off the Red Devils’ resistance, who wave goodbye to the Champions League in the quarter finals.

An star performance from Leo Messi ended Manchester United’s run in the Champions League. Barcelona secured the win at Camp Nou (3-0) in the second leg of the quarter finals to pass through into the semis. Messi (16’ and 20’) and Coutinho (61’) found the back of the net for the hosts.

Needing to recover from a 0-1 deficit from the first leg, the Red Devils caused a lot of problems in the early stages but were unable to beat Ter Stegen before Messi struck twice for the ‘Blaugrana’. Man United depart from the Champions League after some big moments in the competition, such as their win in Turin against Juventus – including a free kick from Juan Mata – and a brilliant showing against PSG – which was enough to make it through to the quarter finals.

United’s next game comes on Sunday, when they face Everton at Goodison Park. The aim for the end of the season is clear: qualify for next season’s edition of the Champions League.
