The Red Devils, with Juan Mata on the bench, could not break the deadlock after 120 minutes, and Middlesbrough stunt United on penalties 1-3. The next match will be on Saturday against Crystal Palace.
Manchester United lost to Middlesbrough in the Capital Cup One on the penalty shoot-out at Old Trafford after finishing the extra time 0-0. Juan started on the bench alongside other regular starters and this time he did not play any minute. Rooney, Young and Martial came on the pitch in the second half.
Karanka´s team showed from the beginning that they would not make things easy. Fourth in the competitive Championship, Boro played without complexes and tried repeatedly to Romero. United also had their chances (Fellaini, Martial, Lingard…), but failed to resolve the clash before the penalty shoot-out. There, only Mejías was beat by Andreas Pereira, while Boro scored three penalties.
Crystal Palace will be the next challenge for United (Saturday kick off 15 pm at Selhurst Park). An important game to keep threatening the leaders, Manchester City and Arsenal, and also to leave the defeat in the Cup behind. Hopefully Juan will return to the line-up.
